With Boateng Rumors Surfacing, Monchi Declares No More Roma Signings

Our Roma Transfers: Summer 2017 section stands at a whopping 111 stories. Starting with the near capture of Franck Kessie back in April to yesterday’s signing of Patrik Schick, we’ve really covered the gamut of Roma’s silly season. Between that fake signing and yesterday’s record breaker, we covered everyone from Chicharito to Jesus Navas to Domenico Berardi and even Kasper Dolberg, while lamenting (to put it lightly) the sales of Mohamed Salah, Antonio Rudiger and Leandro Paredes.

It’s been a far ranging and in many ways frustrating summer, though the club certainly finished with a flourish, breaking their 17-year-old transfer record by allotting €42 million for Schick. And if we believe today’s news, that’s all she wrote. Speaking to the media today Monchi declared Roma’s transfer campaign done and dusted, while also calling the Schick signing one of his most satisfying.

Still, the rumors and questions persist. With Leandro Castan possibly buying his way out of his Roma contract, and with Hector Moreno seemingly struggling to acclimate to Italian football (though we’d have no way of knowing since he hasn’t played), there appears to be a vacancy in the center of defense, leading many to speculate Roma will make a last minute purchase.

Tops on that fictional list is Bayern Munich stalwart Jerome Boateng. With his minutes dwindling each of the past three seasons, and with Germany’s defense of their 2014 World Cup title less than a year away, this rumor does hold a bit of water, at least as far as Boateng seeking more playing time away from Bayern is concerned. Boateng may not be what he was a few years ago, but he’s only a couple days shy of his 29th birthday, so would seem to at least have a few seasons left under his belt.

Roma’s market may be closed in name, but an 11th hour swoop for Boateng would certainly be a pleasant surprise.
