CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio — Get ready to crack, snap and pop when you sit down to enjoy what the sea has to offer at the newly opened Seafood Shake on Coventry Road.
Patrons will be kept busy using their hands to break crab legs, open shells and dig meat from oysters.
The restaurant serves up plentiful helpings of steamed, seasoned seafood-in-a-clear-bag that diners can choose to eat right from the bag, or, if more elbow room is required, from the paper-covered table after the bag’s spicy contents have been spilled.
Either way, get ready to use your hands.
After 11 months of renovations, Seafood Shake opened its doors to the public July 21 at 1852 Coventry Road, in the space the Winking Lizard formerly occupied. The look of the interior now has the appearance of a dockside shack, putting one in the mood to down some seafood.
As for the business’s name, part-owner Hang Zheng said, “We steam (seafood) in a bag, add seasoning, then shake it up. That’s where the name comes from. We have had customers think of milk shakes, but that’s not why it’s called Seafood Shake.”
While there are few similar restaurants in Greater Cleveland, Seafood Shake is akin to restaurants found along seaport towns, such as New Orleans or Boston. For those who love seafood and to get involved in eating it, Seafood Shake is the right place.
Be forewarned, your hands will get messy and you’ll likely leave with the zesty smell of seasoning on your fingers. As the menu states, “Just Dive In!”
To start, patrons get to select from among the seafood they want in their bag. Eleven choices include lobster, Dungeness crab, shrimp, oysters, crawfish, clams and mussels. Portions are generous.
Step two involves selecting a flavor from among choices such as Cajun, lemon pepper, garlic, or the “Shake Sauce,” a mixture of the above.
