Science and Star Wars Web Series Debuts Next Month

Disney has announced, via The Star Wars Show on the Star Wars official YouTube channel, that the web series Science and Star Wars will debut in September – and shared a trailer featuring some very special guests. Since the debut of the Star Wars universe in 1977, scientists have been debunking many of its fantasy elements while also finding ways to make others a reality.

The truth is that the Star Wars universe has never been about scientific accuracy and that’s OK – after all, one of the many appeals of space operas (and science fiction in general) is to explore the possible lengths of science with big doses of imagination. Still, there have been various books, websites, and series exploring the science of Star Wars – and with the new trilogy and the anthology series happening, Disney is launching a new web series focused on the science of the galaxy far, far away.

As announced in the video above (starting around the 1:50 mark), Science and Star Wars will delve into the science of the franchise and how it relates to actual scientific breakthroughs in the real world. Presented by Anthony Carboni and and sponsored by IBM, the series will feature researchers, scientists, and very special guest stars, such as Ashley Eckstein (voice of Ahsoka Tano in Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and C3PO himself, Anthony Daniels. All of them will come together to explain and demonstrate how close the real world science has come to some elements from Star Wars technology – such as blasters, droids, land speeders, and (of course) lightsabers.

Back in 2005, Discovery Channel produced the documentary miniseries Science of Star Wars, which explored and discussed various aspects of Star Wars from a scientific perspective.
