SANTA ANA – A 34-year-old assistant wrestling coach at Santa Ana High School was arrested this week on suspicion of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old female student, a police spokesman said on Wednesday.
Jaime Oredain, a part-time coach and activities supervisor for the school, was booked into the Santa Ana City Jail on suspicion of felony statutory rape, oral copulation and digital penetration, Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
The victim, who no longer attends Santa Ana High, told police she had an inappropriate relationship with Oredain that spanned eight months. Oredain, a Santa Ana resident, is suspected of having sex with the victim many times on campus during school hours, Bertagna said.
He is on paid leave pending the police investigation and not allowed to return to the Santa Ana High School campus, a school official said.
“These allegations are being taken seriously and are in direct conflict of the district’s zero-tolerance policy relating to staff misconduct, in which all district employees are held at the highest ethical standards,” Deidra Powell, a district spokeswoman, said in a statement.
Oredain became aware of the police investigation and fled, telling school officials he was moving to San Antonio, Bertagna said. He posted a video on Instagram on Tuesday that led friends and family to believe he was suicidal, police said.
Police went to Oredain’s home to check on his welfare but he wasn’t there, Bertagna said. After an extensive search, officers found Oredain in the riverbed Tuesday night near the 4000 block of West Segerstrom Avenue. He was arrested without incident.
Detectives asked that anyone with information about the case contact Cpl. M. Lopez at 714-245-8542 or at firstname.lastname@example.org, or the Orange County Crime Stoppers at 1-855-TIP-OCCS.
