Permian percussion program snags national recognition

After what a few Permian High School percussion students said was a disappointing result at state competition last year, the section was named the National Commended Winner in The Foundation for Music Education Mark of Excellence Awards.

It was the equivalent of winning second place at this national contest.

This past spring, Permian Associate Band Director John Carroll and the percussion section organized an end-of-year concert featuring several percussion ensembles and soloists. The ensemble was called the Permian Percussion Project.

From the event, recordings were submitted to The Foundation for Music Education.

Carroll said about 45 students were involved in the concert, which was recorded in the Permian auditorium.

“We took a couple of recordings and that’s what we submitted,” he said.
