The show has received mixed reactions from local residents who expressed outrage over the cast’s apparent connections to a shark-dragging incident.
SARASOTA — The organizers of the MTV Siesta Key watch party at Cinebistro at the Westfield Siesta Key mall has confirmed that the premiere event Monday was cancelled.
Reaction to the show from local residents led to the creation of a “Boycott Siesta Key MTV” Facebook page that pointed to an apparent connection between cast members and a man who allegedly dragged a shark to death behind his boat.
The show’s main cast member is Alex Kompothecras, son of Gary Kompothecras, the chiropractor best-known in these parts for founding the 1-800-ASK-GARY legal and medical referral service. “Siesta Key” originated from a pilot financed by Gary.
Tickets to the premiere at Cinebistro, 3501 S. Tamiami Trail, were $32 with all proceeds going to autism-related charities.
An email sent to ticket purchasers said:
Due to unanticipated events, we have decided to cancel the private screening of ‘Siesta Key’ and charitable event benefiting autism. We apologize for any inconvenience, as a full refund will be issued to all ticket holders. Thank you for your support and we encourage you to watch the show which celebrates the beauty of our town — Monday evening at 10 p.m. on MTV.
The email said that refunds take three to five days to complete.
