Mater Dei looks to make strong statement against St. John Bosco – Orange County Register

This one had “Game of the Year” potential months ago.

It definitely looks like “Game of the Year” now.

Mater Dei plays St. John Bosco on Friday, Oct. 13, at 7:30 p.m. at El Camino College in Torrance.

The teams are ranked 1-2 in California.’s state rankings have Mater Dei at No. 1 and St. John Bosco at No. 2.

They each won their Trinity League openers last week and both scored twice as many points as their opponents. St. John Bosco defeated Orange Lutheran, 42-21, while Mater Dei beat Santa Margarita, 70-35.

Mater Dei (6-0 overall) and St. John Bosco (5-1) have some interesting recent history. Last season, Mater Dei beat St. John Bosco, 26-21, in their Trinity League matchup. St. John Bosco beat Mater Dei, 42-28, in the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 championship game.

Mater Dei coach Bruce Rollinson agreed that the rankings and history reveal how close these teams are.

“We’re both very good football teams,” Rollinson said. “So it’s going to come down to who makes the fewest mistakes.”

St. John Bosco alternated two quarterbacks last week against Orange Lutheran.

Re-al Mitchell, a 5-foot-11, 187-pound senior who committed to Iowa State and was last season’s starter, ran for two touchdowns in that game. He has completed 65 of 100 passes for 949 yards. Mitchell has six touchdown passes with seven interceptions, not a preferred ratio.

Sophomore DJ Uiagalelei, 6-4 and 240, has completed 29 of 44 passes for 474 yards and seven touchdowns without an interception.

Mater Dei junior JT Daniels, a USC commit, has completed 102 of 141 passes for 1,629 yards and 22 touchdowns with one interception. His group of receivers includes Nikko Remigio (27 receptions, 500 yards, eight touchdowns),…
