Laserthread for iOS hit the top ‘social network’ spot in Nigeria, which is considered by experts to be the fastest-growing mobile market and a harbinger of the future.
“The major markets really are dead. People are depressed by traditional social and messenger apps,” says Laserthread founder Scott Rummler. “The emerging markets tell us what the future brings.”
The app offers a radically different design and feature set, based on a ‘Chatwork’ platform that focuses on a fun user experience. In a time when many people report being depressed by traditional social networking, Laserthread has hit its stride.
Rummler says he literally threw out the rulebook in making the app. “I knew it would be folly to do any kind of traditional approach, so I gathered together all the research I could find, studied it carefully, and then threw it off my back porch.”
Laserthread is more along the lines of a super high-end walkie-talkie, or a tactical SWAT tool, in that it is designed for live action, including FaceTime maps integration, and a streamlined design that eliminates the clutter of traditional apps.
“I developed the app after hearing about a friend who was stuck in an elevator, and his friends on social networks didn’t respond. They weren’t engaged. No wonder social ads don’t work. Social networking should be about really doing something – not just killing time.”
Laserthread also has more advanced features than other apps, including a ‘live facelift selfie’, subtle high-tech photo and real time video filters, and a next-generation augmented reality game for iOS 11, which hasn’t even been released yet.
Unusually, the app is only available for iPhone. “People say do Android,” Rummler says. “I say ‘Nope, it’s all about great design, so it has to be iPhone.’ ”
