Garden Grove crowns a new ‘Voice’ and school kids head back to classes this week – Orange County Register

Back in July, Brainiac hipped you to the upcoming summer concert series in Garden Grove that would also include the annual Voice of Garden Grove competition for high schoolers with big voices and big dreams.

Well, we’ve got a winner now, announced a couple of weeks ago, and we’d be remiss if we didn’t drop the answer to the question – Exactly who IS the Voice of Garden Grove? – on you now.

In the finals, which were held Aug. 10 in front of about 3,500 people at Eastgate Park, Althessa Jones, who just graduated from Garden Grove High School, edged out Mya Shimizu, who attends the same school, the first time in the history of the contest that the top two finishers came from the same school

Jones sang “We Don’t Have To Take Our Clothes Off” – that’s right, we do not – by the young British singer Ella Eyre, while Shimizu covered an older number, Michael Jackson’s hit “P.Y.T.”

For winning, Jones picked up a check for $500 and also earned the Garden Grove High School choir department led by Kari Galeener a $500 check, too. As runner-up, Shimizu took home $250, with the Garden Grove High School choir program collecting another $250, too, to bring the choir’s total to $750.

Garden Grove Unified School District welcomed students back for the 2017-18 school year on Wednesday and, well, it’s fun getting up early, getting the kiddos up, driving through streets with lots more traffic on them, isn’t it?

Sigh.

But! There’s a way you can make lemonade out of these back-to-school lemons, at least in Garden Grove. We’re all taking photos of our kids on the first day of the new school year, yes? Garden Grove Unified wants to collect as many of those adorable photos as possible for its First Day of School Photo Contest, and if you’re kid is the cutest – yes, we know he or she is – you and the young ‘un can win a nifty prize.

Here’s what you do. Post your best shot on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram by Friday, Sept. 1, and tag…
