Two Ankeny Centennial girls’ soccer players have made verbal commitments.

Two of the top scorers on the Ankeny Centennial girls’ soccer team have made their college plans.

Lizzy Johnson, a rising junior, has verbally committed to play for the University of Missouri-Kansas City. UMKC is a Division I school.

“I’m really excited,” Johnson said. “I love how it’s right downtown near the Plaza and downtown Kansas City. The atmosphere is awesome, and from what I’ve seen the soccer team is amazing.”

Kenzie Geiger, a senior-to-be, announced earlier that she will play for Augustana University (S.D.). The Vikings are members of NCAA Division II.

“I was down between Augustana and Truman State, and it had been that way since January or February,” Geiger said. “I had offers from both schools, and I went on my second visit to Augustana in May and the coach put a deadline on me, and I think that really helped me to decide. I think I made the right choice, and I’m really happy with it.”

The duo helped Centennial to a 16-4 record last season. The Jaguars reached the Class 3A semifinals of the state tournament before dropping a 1-0 decision to Valley.

Johnson led the team in scoring with nine goals. She also had five assists.

Johnson said she picked UMKC over Northern Colorado and Illinois State.

“I was really looking to go out to Colorado to play soccer, but UMKC came in and something clicked,” Johnson said. “I love it there.”

Johnson is the younger sister of former Centennial standout Kate Johnson, who will be a sophomore this fall on the Creighton women’s team. The Bluejays were among the schools that contacted Lizzy Johnson.
