OC FAIR: The annual event brings its traditional lineup of competitions, live animals, agriculture exhibits, carnival rides, food booths and big-name music acts to the Costa Mesa fairgrounds. Tickets are $12 ($14 weekends); $7 for seniors 60-plus and youths 6-12; free for children 5 and younger. Noon-midnight Wednesday-Friday; 11 a.m.-midnight Saturday-Sunday. July 14-Aug. 13.

VANS U.S. OPEN OF SURFING: The event billed as the world’s largest surf competition and surf culture festival happens in Huntington Beach. Top surfers compete in the World Surf League qualifier. Also: skateboarding and BMX competitions, outdoor movies, art exhibits, and product demos and samples from action sport industry brands, including title sponsor, Vans. Admission is free. Daily 6 a.m.-7 p.m. July 29-Aug. 6.

BOWERS MUSEUM PRESENTS ‘ART & ARCHAEOLOGY CAMP’ KIDSEUM: Opportunities for future explorers, archaeologists and artists in the making. Choose from “Ancient Egypt,” July 31-Aug. 4; “Discovering the First Americans,” Aug. 7-11; “Mysteries of the Museum,” Aug. 14-18. Camp hours: 9 a.m.-3 p.m. $200; members, $175.

NATIONAL CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE DAY: Bring your sweet tooth to Pretend City to celebrate the creation of sweet treats with a variety of educational activities like the “Smart Art: Cookie Craft” and “Math Matters: Counting Chips.” 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 4.

LA HABRA CORN FESTIVAL: Includes a variety of rides, attractions, games, crafts, live music, food and a parade. Hosted by the La Habra Host Lions Club, one of the group’s signature events. 5:30-11 p.m. Aug. 4, 9:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Aug. 5, and 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Aug. 6 at El Centro Lions Park.
