Woodbridge’s boys water polo team solidified its hold on second place in the Pacific Coast League, defeating Northwood, 13-6, in a key league match at Woodbridge Thursday afternoon.

The Warriors also beat Northwood, 10-6, on Oct. 2, at Northwood.

“This was a big one for us, we’re four and Northwood is five in the (CIF) seedings and we want to hold on to our spot,” said Woodbridge Coach Matt Campbell. “We still have some games to play. We talked about it, we’re starting over and these five games (in the second half) are going to impact a lot. I think the kids are believing in themselves.”

The match was tied, 6-6, at halftime, but Woodbridge outscored Northwood, 4-0, in the third quarter and 3-0 in the fourth quarter to seal it.

“It was 6-6 at half and they came out a little flat and we countered real hard and got some quick goals,” Campbell said. “We decided to make a little adjustment on defense and that seemed to make a big difference and by the fourth quarter, they had to start to shoot from outside.

“Grant (Smith) our goalie had a great game and kind of controlled the game from the cage. I think we played some great defense in the second half.”

Smith, a junior, wound up with six saves.

Sophomore Riley Pittman led Woodbridge (17-4, 5-1) with four goals.

“He always gets a lot of shots,” Campbell said. “Today, he put them in; that was the difference.”
