Woodbridge’s baseball team used a complete game effort by John Schultz to defeat Corona del Mar, 2-0, in a Pacific Coast League game at Ryan Lemmon Stadium Tuesday afternoon to move a game behind the league-leading Sea Kings.
Woodbridge (15-6, 7-3) and Beckman (17-4, 7-3) are tied for second place behind CdM (16-5, 8-2).
Woodbridge plays at Corona del Mar Friday at 3:30 p.m.
Schultz (4-2) registered his first complete game, allowing three hits. He struck out two and walked one.
Chazz Martinez (5-2) was the tough-luck losing pitcher. Both runs he allowed were unearned. Martinez scattered five hits and struck out 11.
“They’re all big in this league,” said Woodbridge Coach Tim Murray. “Our guy was just better today. You had two great pitchers going head to head. They made a few mistakes in that inning and it ended up being the difference in the game.
“You look at the numbers and you look at where you’re sitting and you need to win the first one and now it sets up for a big one on Friday.”
Woodbridge pushed across two runs in the fifth inning. Caleb Anderson reached on a single with one out and went to second on a wild pitch.
Jackson Lyon was aboard on an error. Both Anderson and Lyon advanced a base on a passed ball and scored on a single by Kyle Giberson with two outs. Giberson was thrown out trying to go to second.
“He was clutch and he has been for us,” Murray said of Giberson. “He’s leading our team in RBI for a reason and he’s in the three-hole for a reason.”
Corona del Mar’s biggest threat came in the second inning when Nolan Dunn doubled and advanced to third with two outs. But Schultz worked out of trouble.
Schultz capped a great performance by retiring CdM in order in the seventh.
“That’s a really good team and I knew it going in, because I faced them earlier in the season (a 5-0 win by Corona del Mar on March 21),” Schultz said. “I knew I had to hit my spots and execute. The defense picked me up today.
“I was on the team last year that was fortunate enough to be league champs, so I knew what it takes, so I knew going into it that we needed to win this one, and now we just focus on Friday and try and get that one too.”
CdM Coach John Emme reminded his squad after the game that his team is still in first place.
“We’re still one up on the field and if we come back Friday and take care of business we will be fine,” Emme said.
“We didn’t score, so there’s not much you can do. He (Martinez) did a great job. He gave us every opportunity to win the game.”
J.T. Schwartz had two hits for CdM.
Defensively, Anderson made a couple excellent plays in right field for Woodbridge.
