Twelve California State University, Chico students with major achievements in the classroom and the community will be honored at the 36th annual Lt. Robert Merton Rawlins Merit Award reception on Monday, Oct. 16. The event begins at 5 p.m. in Colusa Hall. 

The award, one of the largest and most prestigious at CSU, Chico, celebrates scholarship, extracurricular activities, and professionally related and outstanding academic accomplishments. Awards are based on these standards, along with evidence of students’ sincere intent to complete their education, increase their personal knowledge, and to achieve success in every aspect of their lives.

Faculty nominate the recipients, who receive scholarships of $5,000. All of the students have unique and inspiring journeys, including seniors Parker Rhodes and Marisa Davini.

Parker Rhodes is a senior pursuing a double major in economics and political science. He was a 2014 recipient of the President’s Scholar Award and was selected from a highly competitive field for the position of CSU, Chico’s Panetta Congressional Intern for 2016. In that capacity, he worked full-time for Congressman Doug LaMalfa in Washington, D.C., and was responsible for constituent relations and policy research, among other tasks. Parker served as on the Associated Students (AS) Legislative Affairs Council during the 2015-16 academic year, and has been involved with other campus groups including serving on the AS Community Affairs Council and as a tutor for Community Action Volunteers in Education.
