Sand and surf – and 1,200 hot dogs – heat up opening day at U.S. Open of Surfing – Orange County Register

HUNTINGTON BEACH Gary Sahagen looked down at the surf and sand early Saturday morning from the Huntington Beach Pier, where an action-sports festival is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of people for nine days.

“I call it, ‘The circus arrives’,” Sahagen, a local surfer, said with a chuckle. “This is a big event for Surf City, this is where we’ve left our mark in society… This is a big celebration of surfing this week. “

Thousands flocked to the U.S. Open of Surfing on kick-off day, and there was plenty to do other than check out the surfing.
