FARMINGTON — A retired Window Rock District Court judge could be appointed acting chief justice for the Navajo Nation.

Members of the Law and Order Committee could consider a bill this week that appoints Thomas J. Holgate to the seat after current acting Chief Justice Allen Sloan retires on Monday.

Holgate retired as a district court judge in August 2012 after serving 15 years on the bench, according to a fiscal year 2012 report from the tribe’s Judicial Branch.

The bill containing his nomination to the high court was posted on the tribal council’s website and is eligible for consideration by the Law and Order Committee starting Monday.

It is listed on the proposed agenda for the committee special meeting on Monday in Window Rock, Ariz.

If committee members approve the bill, Holgate would serve until a permanent chief justice is confirmed.

A separate bill was introduced on July 21 that names Montana attorney JoAnn B. Jayne as the next chief justice.
