SCOTLAND – Although not a single parent herself, Carla Bender knows what it is like to grow up in a family parented by a single mother. She still keeps a photo of her mom, Fern Shoop, on her desk at work.

“Being a single parent is never easy,” she said. “My mother raised four of us by herself.”

Her mother died last year, but she holds close to her heart the lessons learned from the woman she still looks up to and admires for her dedication to her family.

“As kids, we often thought she was angry, but she struggled to be the sole provider and support for us,” she said.

Bender would like to share the lessons she learned growing up in a single-parent family with a a weekly support group she is organizing at Mt. Pleasant United Brethren Church with the community’s single parents, as well as…
