Orange County deputy sheriff recovering after being shot; suspect dead

Soon after he joined the Orange County Sheriff’s office in 1996, Rick Stelter helped start a unit that keeps tabs on juvenile offenders with the hope that they will be less likely to commit crimes in the future.

On Tuesday afternoon, he was shot by Christopher Redding Jr., 20, who was convicted of attempted murder at 17 and recently released from prison, Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said.

Stelter, now a 45-year-old sergeant, was in stable condition after the shooting, Demings said at a news conference at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

“He is able to communicate; he’s in relatively good spirits,” Demings said.

Three other deputies fired back at Redding, killing him.

A young woman was in the car with Redding at Savannah at Park Central apartments, near John Young Parkway and Americana Boulevard, when the shooting started. She may have received a minor wound, Demings said.
