On the Road and Home Again” is Collection of Rhymes Inspired by Such Poets as Ogden Nash and Dr. Seuss

Jerry Rose, a retired sociology professor, world traveler, and renowned expert on the assassination of John F. Kennedy who is active in community theater as an actor, director, and playwright, has completed his new book “Word Play: On the Road and Home Again”: a book of 300 rhyming poems celebrating the gift of language. Its topics of satire cover the waterfront of human experiences—from children to the elderly, love and marriage, work and play, tourist sites worldwide. Nursery rhymes are fractured by little Jack Horner being sent to the corner while another Jack is a skinny jayhawk beanstalk in the state of Kansas—and while Handel and Gretel are lost in the forest. There are no holds barred in this wrestling match between fantasy and reality.

Rose shares, “’Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.’ Not true! Words can and have hurt people terribly, and they have helped them as well: words of consolation or of profound explanation have had huge positive human effects. Words are serious and consequential—something that needs to be said at the opening of a book that plays with words in many, many ways. But the premise of this writing is that wordplay is very important itself since it allows us to review the experience of our lives when we step back from the frustrations of our children, our jobs, our lousy football teams, our infirmities of age, etc., etc., and to put a humorous twist on difficulties in our lives—a feeling like one gets in the theatre, where another form of plays allows us to see the lighter side of our travails as we watch these enacted as plays and allows us to leave the theatre and go back to our own grindstones.”

“Word Play” is an appropriate “gift” book to celebrate special events and to provide diversion for travel; but also for stay – at – homes who are ill or otherwise not able or inclined to travel. This is Jerry Rose’s first book of poetry, but others may be coming.

Readers who wish to experience this work of poetry can purchase“Word Play: On the Road and Home Again” at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes store, Amazon, Google Play or Barnes and Noble.
