Community’s generosity shines through
When we first learned of the devastation Hurricane Harvey had on so many people in our state, we knew we needed to step up now more than ever to help our fellow Texans. What we didn’t know is if people had the bandwidth to give to both hurricane relief as well as the causes near and dear to them locally through our community’s annual giving event, North Texas Giving Day.
Luckily, no one considered this an either/or. This year’s North Texas Giving Day raised a record-setting amount of money: $39 million for 2,723 nonprofits. Of that amount, 1,775 donations totaling more than $370,000 were given to hurricane relief funds, accentuating the generosity of this community.
Communities Foundation of Texas started North Texas Giving Day in 2009 as a way for donors to give wisely to local nonprofits, and it has grown into a fundraising juggernaut.
As we all know, demands on the North Texas region will continue to increase in the short and long term as many Harvey evacuees relocate to our area to escape the storm damage. In addition to supporting recovery efforts, we are encouraging everyone to continue giving generously to local nonprofits who keep our region strong.

Don’t raise billboard heights
A weekend drive to see the wide-open, beautiful Texas landscape may soon bring you face-to-face with billboards nearly as tall as a 10-story building — and not just on interstate highways, but along any federal road in Texas. This is the goal of TxDOT’s proposed rule change that is coming up for a Texas Transportation Commission vote.
By their count, up to 20,000 existing billboards could be doubled in height from 42 1/2 feet to 85 feet — and this from the agency that coined the phrase “Don’t Mess with Texas.”
