As the drummer for Fuel and again as the drummer for Tantric, Kevin Miller has seen what the top of the rock n’ roll mountain looks like.
There are hit records, sold out arenas and travel around the world. But the Allentown native says not all of it is as much fun as it might seem.
“People think you’re hanging out on the bus and drinking booze all day and partying with chicks and after parties,” Miller says. “Hell no, man. I never worked so hard in my life.”
All the work and pressure that comes along with being a top selling band can also wreak havoc with relationships, both personal and professional, says Miller, who in 2004 was fired as Fuel’s drummer after seven successful years and numerous hits, including “Hemorrhage (In My Hands),” “Innocent,” and “Shimmer.”
More than a dozen years later, Miller has embarked on a new project that takes him back to his roots playing in cover bands around the Lehigh Valley.
On Saturday night, Kevin Miller’s Smashed will make its debut public performance at Molten Lounge inside the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem.
But this is not just any cover band. For Miller, it has been a labor of love that has taken him nearly 2½ years to perfect, as he has recruited and rehearsed with a squad of handpicked mostly local musicians to recreate the sounds of some his favorite rock singles from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s through today, he says.
Pearl Jam, Aerosmith, Molly Hatchet, Boston, the Eagles, The Fixx, INXS and Alice in Chains are just some of the bands Smashed will cover. Miller says the band will also play songs by his former bands, Fuel and Tantric.
Part of what makes this band so unique, Miller says, is that every member can take lead vocals, giving the band a broader range to cover more bands.
