Eliza Dushku to Star in David Goyer Fantasy Adaptation ‘The Black Company’

The adaptation will also include the forthcoming book in the series, ‘Port of Shadows.’

Fantasy book series The Black Company is coming to the small screen.

David S. Goyer and Eliza Dushku are developing Glen Cook’s popular 10-book fantasy series with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress set to star, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. A network is not yet attached.

The drama follows the exploits of the Black Company, an elite mercenary unit that carries out the nefarious deeds of the highest bidder across a Tolkien-esque landscape. When these hard-bitten men discover the prophecy that the embodiment of good has been reborn, they must re-examine their loyalties. Dusku will star as “The Lady,” a dark sorceress who rules over the Northern Empire and uses the Black Company to further her domination of a power structure rife with usurpers. The adaptation includes the forthcoming book Port of Shadows, which lands between books one and two of the franchise. Port will be released in 2018 by Tor Books.

The drama is being developed by independent production company IM Global Television, with Dushku’s Boston Diva Productions, which optioned the series as well as Port. Dushku will exec produce alongside Boston Diva’s Nate Dushku, Ami Lourie and Sam Maydew of Silver Lining Entertainment.

Goyer will also exec produce via his Phantom Four banner, which has a first-look deal with IM Global TV. Phantom Four’s Kevin Turen is also attached as an EP.

“Glen Cook’s books turn the traditional fantasy adventure tropes on their ear with wry, dimensional characters and a modern sensibility, IM global TV president Mark Stern said. “We’re excited to explore this intricate and exciting world for television with David and Kevin along with Eliza, Nate, Ami and Sam.”

The Black Company is vast in scope yet remains fundamentally relevant through the morally ambiguous choices it presents at every turn,” Dushku said. “We are excited to bring Glen Cook’s classic story to life with Mark and David, luminaries in the cinematic pursuit of science fiction and epic fantasy, who will inevitably assemble poignant characters embroiled in jaw-dropping action.”

The Black Company marks the latest fantasy book series to be adapted for the small screen following the breakout success of HBO’s Game of Thrones. Starz has found success with Outlander and MTV has done well with The Shannara Chronicles, among others.

The Black Company comes as IM Global TV is continuing to expand its offerings. The company’s TV slate includes Noah Hawley’s Cat’s Cradle project, in the works at FX, and TNT’s Time of Death, as well as more than a dozen other projects in development.

Cook was repped in the deal by agent Russell Galen.

Dushku, who recently signed on for a recurring arc on CBS’ Bull with an option to be promoted to series regular for season two, counts Dollhouse and Bring It On among her credits. She’s repped by Paradigm, Silver Lining and Jackoway…
