Lady Vols no longer ‘rule the SEC’

In 2005, LSU was the team to beat, and Tennessee got it done. The Greenville News sports front on March 7, 2005 said ‘Vols Rule the SEC’ as ‘Tennessee holds off No. 1 LSU’ 67-65 for the 2005 SEC women’s basketball tournament championship. South Carolina has won the last two tournament championships, beating Mississippi State 66-52 last year in Jacksonville.

Top four seeds in 2017 are No. 1 South Carolina, No. 2 Mississippi State, No. 3 Missouri and No. 4 Kentucky. The LSU Lady Tigers still hadn’t won the tournament (18-10, 8-8) since the 2003 championship, but Lady Vols (this year’s No. 5 seed) have won it all as recently as 2014.
