Fiestas Patrias celebrations at South Park Community Center Sept. 16, Seattle Center Sept. 16-17 and Washington State Fair Sept. 17.
Fiestas Patrias celebrates Western Washington’s Latino community in Seattle’s South Park on Saturday, Sept. 16, and at Seattle Center on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 16-17. Latin American countries including Belize, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico and Nicaragua celebrate their independence in September, and people from around the Northwest gather to enjoy and share their cultures with music, dance and food. The motto for 2017 Fiestas Patrias is “Let’s Walk Together,” and all are invited to share in the celebration of Latin American culture.
A parade through Seattle’s South Park neighborhood — with Mexican cowboys on dancing horses, mariachi and marching bands, clowns and lowrider cars — kicks off the festivities Saturday. A community fiesta, which features entertainment, traditional Latin American food vendors, kids activities, a health fair, Zumba dance classes and a karaoke contest, follows the parade and continues through the day in South Park.
Fiestas Patrias events Saturday and Sunday at Seattle Center include a health fair, music, cooking demonstrations, food vendors, children’s activities and film festival. The Viva! Latino/a Art Exhibit showcases paintings, drawings, photography, ceramics and more by local Latin artists at Seattle Center Armory’s upstairs gallery, with a chance to meet the artists at a reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Sea Mar Youth Boxing hosts Best of the Northwest Amateur Boxing at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Seattle Center Pavilion.
